Big Ups – Goes Black

Sat, 21 Aug 2021 20:00:56 +0000

This reminds me a lot of the early Single Mothers, which is not a bad thing.

Was this band big or notable? I found them a few years ago around the time their last full length came out, but know pretty much nothing about them.

Go listen to the whole album.

Generation of Vipers – Dark Matter

Tue, 05 Jul 2016 22:41:21 +0000

I’m not crazy about this band’s name. However after (very) a little research I would guess the name is lifted from 1942 book by Philip Wylie, that is basically about how everything is stupid and fuck everything.

Makes their name a little cooler.

As We Draw – Losing Ground

The Village — Fri, 24 Jun 2016 20:20:27 +0000

I pictured burlier dudes making this music, but its skinny kids in chokers.

I also pulled this picture from MySpace. Weird.

Aminals – War Widows

Sun, 12 Jun 2016 04:00:00 +0000

A bandcamp supporter comments sum this up perfectly: “Been a fan since 06/07 which is scary to think about. Phenomenal band. A total mystery as to how they aren’t bigger.”

How does a band like this fly under the radar for 10 years (at least as far as I can tell)?

An incredibly hard to search band name already doesn’t help. Neither does a great though sort of generic sound. Aminals are good, they are totally nailing that early 00s metal/hardcore Converge thing, but so have lots of bands.

Despite what it might sound like, I do like the album and its free on their bandcamp page.

Black Breath – Feast of the Damned

Fri, 10 Jun 2016 04:00:00 +0000

This is what head banging was invented for.

I didn’t appreciate how good these guys are when I saw then open for Converge & Coalesce a bunch of year ago and I regret it.

Torch Runner – Attrition

Thu, 09 Jun 2016 04:00:00 +0000

Where has this band been and why didn’t someone tell me about this.

Sludgey crust thrash with some Coalesce/Botch touches.

Materic – If The Straw Is Dry, It Will Light Up

Sat, 10 Jan 2015 05:00:00 +0000

This band is Russian, so I apologize right off the bat if Google translate has mangled the original untranslated Russian title of this song: “если солома высохла, она загорится”.

Sort of droney post rock with some 90s emo touches, particularly in the vocals.

Its free on their Bandcamp page.
