I forget sometimes how long Larry Arms has been around. I bought Ghost Stories (the album this song is from) 13 years ago.

I know everybody gets all wet and bothered about Jawbreaker, but for me, this is a Lucero song. It's too the point with me, that Jawbreaker’s original doesn’t sound right, that's the cover for me.

Every single one of the dozen or so times I’ve seen Lucero, they’ve played this. Hell, I think Ben even played when I saw him solo. They own this now, sorry Blake. 

I really liked this band’s first 2 records (this song is from their 2nd record, Ghost Stories), but they kind of fell out of my periphery. Now and then I’d remember them, check something out, like it, and move on. That’s where this band existed for me, for years.

Then a friend became a Larry Arms die-hard. Well, die-hard might not be a strong enough term; dude was in deeeeep. And because I’m a dick, this turned me off the band. It's hard to keep perspective when someone says every song and every album Larry Arms has is better than any other song or album ever. No one had any perspective, he thought they were Jesus with a guitar, and I thought they were just another ok, but so what band.

The fact is, they are a great band, and I slept on them. Probably not god-like, but good.

There is a collection of bands that I appreciate what they did, but would be thrilled if I never heard them again. The Beatles, The Velvet Underground (or any Lou Reed for that matter), and The Rolling Stones, among others. 

I completely understand why these bands are important. I do, I swear, but I’ve moved on. 

I always forget about this band. So great.

Yes, “Hurt” is a better song and “Rusty Cage” is sillier, but “Solitary Man” is pretty damn great. I actually have spent a fair amount of time this month trying to pick the right Cash cover to post. The American albums are full of covers, many of them good, but not that many really stick with me. "Solitary Man,“ "Hurt,” and “One” do.

I remember seeing the band after Jupiter came out, and they played this live. They played a 15 to 20-minute version. It sounded so huge and epic. 

This covers fits perfectly in the time frame they recorded it. So spacey and prog.

Why does no one talk about how amazing this band was anymore?
