Friday, 10 at 8 Seconds.

With Touché Amore playing at 9:50 and these guys playing at 10, a choice has to be made. Skip Banner Pilot? Skip Touché Amore? Or try to see parts of both sets and hope there isn’t a line.

By the time Fest rolls around, Banner Pilot should have a new album out. If it's even ½ as good as Collapser, I’m going to be stoked.

Atlantic City is easily one of my favorite songs of all time, if not the favorite. Hell, it was the first song posted here. So it's no easy task to make a version of this song I’m going to like, but The Hold Steady did.

The piano intro is a great melancholy intro, exactly what you would expect for this song, then the balls kick in. It's such a perfect ape of the “big Springsteen” sound. 

I’ve never been a big fan of the Misfits. I’m sure to some this is heresy, but it's the truth. Somehow they managed to sound to cartoony, even next to the Ramones. 

Nevertheless David Pajo’s (Slint, Tortoise, Royal Trux, Zwan, etc) 9-song Misfits cover album, “Scream With Me” is killing me.

Friday, 7:50 at The Atlantic.

Last year I ended up running (let's be honest, chubby guy fast walking) from the No Idea house to 8 Seconds to try to see this band. I missed the 1st half of their set, but what I did see was great.

I love this band (whoever the hell is in it now) and would gladly run (chubby guy fast walk) to see them again.

I’ve always kind of thought the album version of this song had a sadness to it (probably just the tempo). Drag’s version of this song turns that sadness up a few notches (not just with tempo). 

How I’ve avoided posting JTE before now is beyond me. 

The time I heard of Justin Townes Earl, he was opening for Lucero. He was great live, and I bought his first record, “The Good Life,” that night. A year or two later, “Midnight At The Movies” came out, and I wasn’t thrilled with it. It lacked the old-timey/honky-tonkness of the first record. But it slowly won me over, and eventually eclipsed “The Good Life." 

The same thing happened when "Harlem River Blues” came out. I heard a few songs and immediately dismissed them. And now I’m on my fifth or sixth listen through the entire album in as many hours.

Friday, 8:45 at The Florida Theater of Gainesville.

This is posted out of order because Lifetime, a band everyone loves, but I couldn’t give a shit about, had to drop off Fest due to babies. But still wanting to play, members of Lifetime remembered they had this other band that the kids are into, and now Kid Dynamite is playing.

There are no other bands that even come close to how badly I want to see this band. Sorry, Great Explainer and Touche Amore, you lose.

I’m a big Young Widows fan and tend to eat up whatever they put out. This includes previous bands like Black Cross and Breather Resist and side projects like Brain Banger and Black God. Bad Secrets falls into the side projects category.

The band is Evan Patterson of Young Widows and Dan Davis of Kodan Armada. The whole album was improvised and recorded during three weekends, and it sounds like it. As much as I really want to love this record and its weirdness, I can really only listen to a couple of tracks before I have to stop.

During their Hazards of Love tour, the band would come out, say nothing, and play “The Hazards of Love in its entirety. Then take a short break and come back out, talk and play the hits. 

The second set would end with this cover. When I saw them, it was more over the top than it is in this recording. Though it's possible, it just seemed like that because I was actually there.
