DAYDREAMING

Daydreaming by Middle Brother

A “super group” made up of dudes I (for the most part) didn’t know existed.

The album is great, though, and the Replacements cover is amazing.

CHALK POINT

Drone with less noise.

I’m pretty sure posting this band two days in a row is breaking my own rules for this site. Even if yesterday was a collaboration.

Go listen to and then buy everything this band has.

*Between the time I wrote this and when I published it, several records in the linked store sold out. Move fast.

Holy shit.

I’m pissed that these guys are a local band, and I had no idea they existed. I’ve been missing out, hard.

The band just put out a 4-way split 7" with ChildBite, Hellmouth, and the Golden Torso of Black Flag covers. And it looks like the plan is to do a series of 7’s with the same bands each time covering a different hardcore band (Dead Kennedys, Bad Brains, Misfits, and Minor Threat).

Go get this from the band’s Bandcamp page now.

DAN'S CHRISTOPHER WALKEN IMPERSONATION

I love this band and the album this song is on (Brush Your Teeth, Again), but for some reason I can’t quite put my finger on, I'm embarrassed of that.

I’m dumb.

Go download the album from the band’s Bandcamp page, its name your own price.

SUDDENLY SEYMOR (ACOUSTIC)

Posting an acoustic song by a not-acoustic band is sort of cheating. And falling in love with said acoustic song kind of jinxes the band’s “real” songs.

Nevertheless, I love the hell out of this song. My wife actually cried the first time she heard it.

Being 3/5 of Iron Chic doesn’t hurt either. Go buy everything these guys have.

YOKE

Basement - Yoke

Its weird for me to think of bands as having been influenced by Small Brown Bike. Why not just be influenced by Hot Water Music and skip the middleman?

Honestly, though, it feels weird. SBB was one of my favorite bands for nearly 15 years (the new album is not good), and being from Michigan, I got to see them pretty often, and rarely in full venues. So I forgot they had a following outside the people I knew.

Basement are/were clearly part of that following. Canada Square could be a “River Bed” era SBB cover. Hell, even his voice sounds Mike Bike-ish.

Yes, their influences are close to the skin but, but “I Wish I Could Stay Here” is Basement’s first album and I’m sure with time they’ll go into themselves. When Small Brown Bike started, everyone said they were just Hot Water Music clones.

All posts in October will be from bands playing Fest 10 in Gainesville, Florida. Everything will be posted in the order that they are playing.

Saturday, 8:50 at Double Down.

I know posting something from the band's acoustic ep is bullshit. But I don't really know this band that well (at all), and I like this.

So I’d go see them, because "my schedule" is pretty packed with bands I already know, and I need some surprises.

Every time I’ve seen B&T, they’ve been awesome. Last year’s hardcore cover set(s) were great.

However, if you caught them at the pre-fest show at 1982, go see the Riot Before at the Double Down.

Friday, 1 am at the Laboratory.

Last year 8 people watched these dudes, and now they’re closing out a venue. It's not “The Venue,” but still, nice move.

There is a “mystery band” playing at the same time as CTO at another venue, so there is a chance that, depending on how that mystery is, I’d miss at least part of these guys' set. But the times are 20 minutes off, so maybe I wouldn’t have to miss much.

If CTO mentions a “Sleep EP” that is “being recorded soon,” yell “WHEN?” at them. Less talk, more recording.

Unless you’re cooler than me and know about some secret warehouse, hotel set, or house party show by some band, this is probably the musical end of your Friday night. Go eat some Five-Star.

Initially, Spaynard was on my list as sort of a filler band. Someone whom I’ve heard but didn’t have any strong opinions about, either, and were playing during a dead spot in “my schedule.” But the more I listen to this, the more I think they are a band that should be made a point to see.

If Fest or No Idea records have a sound, this is the less shouty version of that.

These guys are playing at the same time as Shores, who, as I mentioned, I would also like to see. But as I haven’t seen Campaign before, they win. But if their set is anything like the smaller bands I was excited about last year (Captain We’re Sinking and the Anchor), their set will suck, and I’ll end up back at the shores show.

Friday, 10:30 at the Atlantic.

My introduction to Shores last year: driving from Michigan to Gainesville with the band and then seeing them play 3 times in four days.

There is a pretty good chance that, despite liking these guys quite a bit, I’d skip them or at least miss part of their set so I could see Campaign, a band I’ve never seen.
